Event Name: La Riviere 6th Annual Raptor Festival
Description: Land-bound humans with feet firmly planted on the ground will never experience the freedom of flight as birds know it. But for one day, people can let their imaginations fly free. Blair Morrison Hall in La Riviere, MB is the place to be on April 22nd, 2017, beginning at 10am and running till 4pm. to take in La Riviere’s 6th Annual Raptor Festival. Want a thrill this spring? LUD of La Riviere invites you to come join us as we celebrate and watch the spring migration of amazing hawks and eagles through Manitoba’s scenic Pembina Valley. Come see the sky burst into motion and color. No experience necessary. Whether you are a seasoned birder or just curious about the hobby, bring your binoculars and a camera, and dress for the weather. Or join others indoors for the jaw dropping natural spectacle of live raptors. This festival brings together birders and photographers of all stripes to learn and explore with top notch professionals and enthusiastic local guides. See live birds of prey, see them eye-to-eye, score some fantastic close-up photos and gain insight into the challenges these birds face in the wild. Browse through the educational displays presented by Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre, Burrowing Owl Recovery Project, Bird Studies Canada, MB Breeding Bird Atlas, Pembina Valley Conservation District, A Rocha Pembina Valley, Travel Manitoba, and Pembina Manitou CDC, all with the support of Golden West Radio. Get up close and personal and gaze into the eyes of real live raptors that have become ambassadors and, along with their handlers, are willing to answer all your questions. Take the guided walking tours, watch the migration and join the bird count with experienced birders or take in the presentations by professional ornithologists. Habitat conservation and environmental concerns are critical to the survival of birds of prey, so the festival will also feature displays and exhibits by local Pembina Valley Conservation District and provincial conservation organizations including Bird Studies Canada, Manitoba Chimney Swift Initiative (MCSI) and Important Bird Area. Dr. Christian Arturo will have informative presentations on topics to be determined. Watch for future announcements. Dr. Arturo did his doctorate on screech owls and is also a great photographer who has traveled to various parts of the world, photographing birds. He knows his stuff and is willing and eager to share! Kids will be entertained with crafts geared to learning about birds, thanks to A Rocha Pembina Valley and their capable volunteers. This is complemented with guided walking tours and bird watching with experienced birders led by Paul Goossen and enthusiastic local guides. Enjoy the Feathered Friends photo contest (with great prizes) and display and which features two categories: raptors and non-raptors. Back by popular demand is judge Wayne Benedet, and assistant Gloria Wiklund. An art raffle is being hosted to raise funds to keep this event free to the public, and Wayne has generously donated one of his artistic photographic works to this raffle(LGA 3746). The canteen will be available to quiet a growly tummy, or indulge in a slice of homemade pie. Be prepared for a couple of HUGE surprises that are guaranteed to make this the best festival ever! Do not miss this!
