HISTORY ARTS AND CULTURE

Morning

Make sure to visit the Nellie McClung Heritage Site and the only two of Nellie's Homes in Canada that are open to the public. Located at the corner of Main Street and PTH #3 in Manitou, the homes allow you to walk in Nellie's footsteps during a time when so much of what she accomplished as a teacher, best selling Canadian author and champion of women's right took flight. Enjoy guided tours through McClung House, Hazel Cottage and the historic Log House, which serves as a museum, admission centre and gift shop.  Open May to September.  For more information, www.visitnellieshomes.ca.

Lunch

Head across the highway for a burger and fries and sit outside to enjoy a beautiful Manitoba day at Burger Shack.  Cool off with an ice cream for dessert before venturing out! They offer a wide assortment of flavours sure to satisfy any craving.

Afternoon

After you are done lunch head west to Darlingford to experience Darlingford School Museum and Darlingford Memorial Park.  Both offer a look into history of local residents and the beginning of the area.  Start with a walk through Darlingford School Museum.  This building which at one time functioned as a school, holds many artifacts and historical items that paint a picture of what life was like decades ago.  Visit our website at www.pembina.ca for more details on hours for museum.

Evening

Something unique to the Town of Manitou is the Manitou Opera House.  This fully accessible building has unique character and hosts many events throughout the year.  From concerts and plays to weddings and other private events this is a must see for everyone to enjoy!  Visitors can find upcoming events and concerts on our website at www.manitouoperahouse.com/bookings.

Additional Activities – Located near La Riviere, you can experience something unique by visiting the WW1 Museum.  This private museum is a must to see including uniforms, medals, equipment and more! Any serious history buffs would also be interested in their comprehensive WW1 military Library and Archives.  Contact tasconab@mts.net for further information.
